Bent claims Mourinho will be concerned about lack of options after injury to key man

Darren Bent believes that the injury to Eric Dier will have left Jose Mourinho sweating since he does not have too many reliable centre-back options at his disposal.

Dier picked up a hamstring problem while on international duty with England that kept him out of the Three Lions’ Nation’s League clash against Denmark last week (Sky Sports).

He subsequently also missed Tottenham’s clash against West Ham on Sunday, although Jose Mourinho did suggest in his pre-match press conference that his injury was not serious (Football.London).

Spurs started with a pairing of Davinson Sanchez and Toby Alderweireld against the Hammers and the former, in particular, did not cover himself in glory as the Lilywhites capitulated in the final ten minutes, throwing away a three-goal lead.

Joe Rodon was also not signed in time to be registered for the group stages of the Europa League, while Eric Dier and Japhet Tanganga were today ruled out through injury.

Speaking about Eric Dier’s injury, Bent told Football Insider: “It will be [a cause for concern]. Whenever somebody gets an injury while they’re away on international duty that is a cause for concern for Jose Mourinho.

“With Eric Dier, Mourinho really rates him, he tried to sign him when he was at Manchester United.

“It’s one of those things that is unfortunate and he’ll be a big miss for Spurs. Spurs haven’t got that many options at centre-back.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Dier comes in for a lot of unfair criticism from parts of the Spurs fan base but Mourinho clearly views him as our best defender. Perhaps our failings on Sunday was proof as to why as not only is the 26-year-old dominant in duals and good at playing the ball out of defence, but he is also our organiser at the back. Thankfully, his injury does not appear to be serious.
