Bent claims Mourinho will be delighted with injured player’s imminent return

Darren Bent believes that Jose Mourinho will be delighted to have Japhet Tanganga back from injury as that gives the Spurs boss plenty of defensive options to chose from.

Tanganga burst on to the scene back in January of this year and seemed to be on his way to becoming a regular in the side until the league was suspended due to the pandemic.

The 21-year-old displayed his versatility, putting in accomplished displays across the backline at right-back, left-back, and central defence.

However, a back injury prevented the youngster from making a single appearance after the restart while a subsequent thigh injury has put him out of action for the last two months (transfermarkt.com).

His only appearance so far this season came in the EFL cup third-round win over Chelsea on penalties.

Mourinho confirmed a couple of weeks ago that the defender was not far away from returning to action, while the club revealed last week that the England Under-21 international was back in training.

Reacting to news of Tanganga’s impending return, Bent told Football Insider: “You can tell from the Amazon documentary Mourinho really likes him.

“I thought he did really, really well when he came in, he was powerful.

“That’s good for Mourinho that he’s got that option there. It’s good because obviously, he can play right-back, left-back and down the middle at centre-half.

“The more options Mourinho has got is perfect for him because of the way they play.

“If you’re a Spurs supporter and you see the squad they’ve got down there, you’ve got to be excited because there’s no telling what this team can do.

“Especially this season where everybody is all over the place. Who knows this could be their year.”
