Darren Bent has claimed that Eddie Howe would be a perfect fit for Tottenham but insisted that the former Bournemouth man’s appointment would be met with ‘a lot of snobbery’.
After Tottenham decided to call off talks with both Paulo Fonseca and Gennaro Gauttso last week, it is unclear what the North London club’s next step is going to be.
Fabrizio Romano said on Tuesday that Spurs have been unhappy with the various media leaks over the past few months during their managerial search and that the club are trying to make their next moves in secrecy.
Football.London’s Alasdair Gold has suggested that the North London club might have to go for someone who is out of work as other clubs would not be willing to let their managers go this close to the start of pre-season.
If Tottenham are to go for someone who is free, Bent believes that Howe might be the best option for his former club.
Bent told talkSPORT regarding Tottenham’s managerial pursuit (20/06/21 from 20:00 onwards): “When you actually look at the people that are out of work, at the minute. You have got Nuno and Eddie Howe.
“If Eddie Howe was to become Spurs manager then I think there would be a lot of snobbery. ‘Why are we appointing Eddie Howe?’
“I think that type of manager, what he has done at Bournemouth, building and getting them playing good football. I think that’s exactly what they need.”
Spurs Web Opinion
I do believe that it is harsh to judge Howe based on the way things ended for him at Bournemouth. It is sometimes difficult for managers to arrest a slide, as Pochettino himself found out at Spurs. That should not take away from the brilliant job he did for the Cherries.
While Howe would be an underwhelming appointment, I would not mind if we went if for him a stop-gap if the club are not able to find the right candidate. Perhaps another approach for Pochettino in 12 months time is something Levy is considering.
