Bent reveals which ex-Spurs man cried ‘how does this guy not play’ in training

Darren Bent has revealed a funny training ground incident involving former Spurs midfielder Kevin-Prince Boateng that took place during the pair’s time together at the club.

Throughout his career, Boateng has established a reputation has quite a colourful character both on and off the pitch.

However, the midfielder was a relatively unknown quantity when he arrived at Tottenham from Hertha Berlin in 2007.

Despite being considered a promising talent, the Ghanaian international only played a handful of times for the Lilywhites before being eventually sold to Portsmouth in 2009.

Boateng has managed to forge a very respectable career in the game since then with spells at the likes of AC Milan, Barcelona, and Eintracht Frankfurt.

Bent revealed that the 33-year-old, who spent the second half of the 2019/20 season on loan at Besiktas from Fiorentina, once scored a worldie during training at Tottenham and proceed to yell out ‘how does this guy not play?’

Speaking to talkSPORT, the former England striker said: “I remember a session at Spurs with Kevin-Prince Boateng.

“Now he’s kind of an out-there character and when he was at Spurs, he didn’t really play.

“I remember him scoring this absolutely worldie goal from about 35 yards, a volley, he screamed out at the top of his voice, ‘how does this guy not play?!’.

“He was talking about himself! We all laughed. The gaffer might have been Juande Ramos at the time.”

The reason Boateng failed to make the grade at Spurs was not due to a lack of quality but due to issues with his attitude and his personality. He and Adel Taarabt, who we signed around the same time, were both unbelievably talented but neither player managed to fulfil their potential.

However, I was impressed with Boateng’s displays in the few chances that he did get for us under Martin Jol and Juande Ramos. I believed that he would eventually replace Jenas in the starting line up and serve as an upgrade over the England international but that never quite materialised at Spurs.
