Berbatov implores Tottenham midfielder to stay at the club

Former Tottenham striker Dimitar Berbatov has adviced Christian Eriksen to stay at Spurs for the time being. Eriksen has been linked to a move to Spanish giants Real Madrid after failing to agree on a contract extension with Spurs till now.

While Eriksen claimed recently that talks about a new contract are on-going, Spurs fans will be more worried with each passing day as the Dane’s current contract comes to an end by 2020. The midfielder has been one of Spurs’ best players in recent seasons after moving from Ajax back in the summer of 2013.

Berbatov who himself moved from Tottenham to Manchester United in the summer of 2009, has suggested that Eriksen would be wise to stay with Spurs as he is at the right club to continue developing as a player,

Speaking to Betfair, the Bulgarian said, “There have been a few reports linking Christian Eriksen to Real Madrid as he still hasn’t signed a new deal at Spurs, and I can understand why he’d be thinking about it – this is Real Madrid after all!”

“I’m obviously biased as I want Spurs to do well, but I think he should stay for now. He’s only 26 with plenty of football ahead of him, and he’s in the right place to improve as a player.”

Berbatov also suggested that while moving to Madrid would guarantee trophies, Eriksen might not be guaranteed a starting spot at the Spanish capital.

He added, “I don’t think he’s money-motivated, but he’s ambitious and wants to develop.”

“Going to Real Madrid is almost a guarantee of winning trophies, but are you going to play every game? Look at Isco – a similar style player to Eriksen – who has been pretty much frozen out this season.”
