Dimitar Berbatov offers his opinion on pair linked with Spurs summer exit

Former Tottenham Hotspur forward Dimitar Berbatov believes that Christian Eriksen and Lucas Moura must focus on the club following recent transfer speculation about their future.

Moura was said to be the subject of deadline day interest from Catalan giants Barcelona, only for Spurs to demand £45million to part with the Brazilian (The Sun).

Eriksen’s future in North London has dominated the summer transfer window with Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid having both been linked with a move for the Dane.

With the pair still remaining as part of Mauricio Pochettino’s squad following the closure of the European transfer window on Monday, Berbatov has had his say on their futures.

The Bulgarian believes that Lucas Moura is likely to get more game time by staying at Spurs while Christian Eriksen should not cause an issue if no clubs made an approach for him this summer.

However he claimed that Eriksen could be disgruntled if Spurs did stop him leaving the club.

Berbatov is certainly speaking from experienced having forced his way out of Spurs to join Manchester United (Telegraph).

“Mauricio Pochettino will be relieved that the transfer window is closed across Europe,” Berbatov told Betfair. “Now the Tottenham manager knows which players he has to work with.

“Without having insider knowledge, it’s difficult to know what happened with Christian Eriksen this summer. If a team wanted him and Spurs stopped him from leaving then it’s possible the player will harbour regrets which could mean he’s still distracted.

“But if nobody came in for Eriksen then he should be fine and can now concentrate on playing for Spurs.

“I expect Eriksen to get his head down and perform for Spurs now.

“His goal in the north London derby last weekend showed that’s what he plans to do.

“The press are reporting that Spurs turned down a late bid for Lucas Moura from Barcelona. That’s a surprised to me and a compliment to Moura who’s emerged as another strong attacking option for Spurs in the past six months.

“I can’t see where he would have fit into a Barcelona front line that already has Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Antoine Griezmann.

“Moura is a better off staying at Spurs and helping them challenge on all fronts this season.”
