Berbatov reveals he hardly spoke to Tottenham team-mate despite prolific partnership

Tottenham fans have been lucky enough to witness some fantastic strike partnerships at White Hat Lane during the Premier League era.

Teddy Sheringham and Jurgen Klinsmann, Peter Crouch and Jermain Defoe, Harry Kane and Dele Alli have all been a joy to watch but in terms of their pure understanding on the pitch, the partnership between Dimitar Berbatov and Robbie Keane is unrivalled.

As soon as Berbatov arrived at Spurs from Bayer Leverkusen in the summer of 2006, he immediately struck up a great understanding with Keane.

The pair tormented defences for a couple of seasons as a result of Keane’s brilliant movement and Berbatov’s intelligence.

They both left Spurs for greener pastures in the summer of 2008 when Keane was bought by Liverpool and Berbatov got his move to Manchester United.

While the Bulgarian went on to win many trophies at Old Trafford, Keane’s time on Merseyside was less successful and came back to North London just six months later.

Berbatov has opened up how the pair immediately clicked despite not talking to one another too much off the pitch.

Speaking to BBC’s Football Daily Podcast, the former Spurs star said: “My relationship with Keano…we didn’t speak much.

“I can’t really explain, but our understanding on the pitch just clicked.”

Berbatov has previously named the Irishman has his best striker partner (RTE Soccer), certainly words of praise for someone who has played with the likes of Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Keane and Berbatov were an absolute joy to watch. I don’t think we have seen a partnership till date in the Premier League that comes close to the level these two were at.

They just always knew where each other would be without looking. It is a shame that our defence was so poor back then or we could have certainly achieved more than we did under Martin Jol.
