Besiktas manager gives honest assessment of how Dele Alli is doing

Besiktas manager Senol Gunes has publicly criticised Dele Alli, admitting that the former Tottenham man has failed to live up to expectations since his switch to Turkey.

It came as a shock to many when Alli completed a loan move to Besiktas during the summer, just seven months on from swapping Spurs for Everton.

Frank Lampard did not mince his words when asked about the reasons behind the 26-year-old’s struggles at Everton, with the Toffees boss suggesting that the midfielder lacks the focus necessary to be successful at the top level (The Mirror).

Alli would have hoped to get his career back on track in Besiktas but things are seemingly not going well for him in Turkey either.

The midfielder has failed to score or assist in any of his last five games, having been substituted in all of those matches (Transfermarkt).

Alli was hauled off at half-time by Gunes in his side’s 5-2 win over Umraniyespor on Sunday, and the Besiktas manager was not too pleased with the former Spurs man’s showing.

Gunes said after the game (via The Sun): “I couldn’t affect the players [yet], now I can easily touch them, but we haven’t touched Dele Alli yet. Let’s not discuss Dele Alli as a player, but he is below expectations in terms of efficiency.”

If Dele is not a success at Besiktas, I would not be surprised if he did a David Bentley and hung up his boots early. The 26-year-old seems to have lost his love for the game, which can happen when someone goes through such a drastic decline in a short space of time.
