Antonio Conte has claimed Eric Dier has a great chance of going to the World Cup with England if he maintains his current form in the Premier League.
In fact, the Spurs boss went as far as to say that Dier is one of the best defenders in the league at this moment in time, although he still has space to grow and improve.
This comes after Dier was snubbed from Gareth Southgate’s latest England squad, despite being a standout performer for Tottenham under both Nuno Espirito Santo and Conte (England).
Dier also missed out on the final squad for the EURO 2020 championships last summer, despite being a regular under Gareth Southgate over recent years.
The England boss instead chose to call up central defenders Marc Guehi, Harry Maguire, John Stones, Conor Coady, Ben White and Tyrone Mings.
When asked about Dier’s lack of England call-up, Conte said (Football London): “Honestly I hope for the players to receive this call-up.
“He’s working very hard and in this moment he’s one of the best defenders in the league. He has also big space to improve his performance and his quality and to become a stronger and stronger player.
“In the past, I had the chance to coach the national team and I understand that sometimes you have a plan. At the moment, Southgate is preparing and he has a plan to prepare a squad for the World Cup in December.
“He knows Eric very well and he has not to discover Eric because he was previously in the national team. I’m sure if Eric continues to play this way, he has a great possibility to go to the World Cup because, I repeat, he’s one of the best defenders in this league.”
Spurs Web Opinion:
I was staggered that Eric Dier was not called up this month. I’m not sure anyone could legitimately argue that Dier hasn’t been in the top three English centre-backs this season, plus he has so much experience at international level with Southgate.
