‘Best for your career’ – Spurs player’s former manager says he should leave the club

Frank de Boer has claimed Steven Bergwijn should consider leaving Tottenham to join Ajax and feels the Dutch giants have the funds available to complete a deal.

The 24-year-old winger has struggled to adapt to life at Spurs since securing a £27 million move to the club in January 2020, with his forward output yielding just four goals and nine assists in 62 appearances.

Bergwijn, who is still waiting to open his account this term, has seen his opportunities in the side limited following Antonio Conte’s arrival, with the Italian using him sparingly so far.

But with the January transfer window fast approaching, the Dutchman has been linked with a move back to his native Netherlands, with Ajax said to be leading the race to acquire his signature.

Reports claim Erik ten Hag is looking to bolster the options at his disposal with Ivorian striker Sebastien Haller set to leave in the winter for the Africa Cup of Nations, and talented winger Antony a potential outgoing.

Ex-Ajax manager De Boer believes his Bergwijn would be a good signing for his former club and is believes the Dutch side now have enough financial power to get a deal over the line.

Speaking to RTL (via Voetbal Primeur), he said: “Since my time, the annual budget has gone from six million to something like thirteen million.

“That is a good combination with players you can get, such as Bergwijn. Players also see that it is a fantastic stepping stone. You get paid well, but it is also the best for your career.”

Spurs Web Opinion

It has been a disappointing stint for Bergwijn at Spurs, especially after he arrived at the club with a lot of hype and potential from his time at PSV Eindhoven. He definitely has talent, but it might be a case where he just isn’t suited to the Premier League.
