‘Best game’ – Publication finally provide positive Djed Spence update for Spurs fans

Stade Rennais Online have reported that Djed Spence’s performance against Nantes on Sunday was his best one since the right-back’s loan switch from Tottenham last month.

Spence did not start a single game for Spurs during the first part of the campaign and the 22-year-old would have been hoping to prove a point to his parent club when he completed a loan switch to Rennes.

Spurs currently have Emerson Royal and Pedro Porro in North London, while Matt Doherty was released in January and the likes of Dejan Kulusevski and Lucas Moura can cover at right-wing-back.

While the England Under-21 international has started regularly since his switch to France, his performances have left a lot to be desired, with Maxi Foot handing him a rating of just 3/10 for his game in the first leg against Shakhtar Donetsk, while questioning his defensive work.

Stade Rennais Online gave the on-loan Tottenham man the same rating for his display against Clement Foot last weekend despite Rennes emerging 2-0 winners.

However, the same publication have given a much more positive assessment of Spence on the back of his performance away at Nantes, with the former Middlesbrough man helping Bruno Genesio’s men keep a clean sheet and emerge with a 1-0 win from the Beaujoire Stadium on Sunday.

Stade Rennais Online gave the right-back a rating of 6/10 on this occasion and wrote:

“Probably his best game since his arrival, yet started badly with unnecessary risk-taking. Lots of appreciable returns where his speed made the difference in cutting crosses.

“He released a strike from Delort (61st).”

Spurs Web Opinion

Spence was always going to take time to produce his best, given that he has hardly played any football so far this season.

The 22-year-old will grow in confidence with each start and the fact that Rennes are keeping faith in him, suggests that he is impressing in the training ground.

It is only really fair to judge his loan spell at the end of the season once he has a number of games under his belt.
