‘Better and better’ – Werner thinks he is forging a link with four Tottenham stars

Timo Werner has admitted that his Tottenham teammates are now gaining a better understanding of his game and his link-up play is thus improving by the day.

When Spurs signed Werner, most supporters knew exactly what the club were getting – a player who will never be the most clinical in front of goal but someone who can be a real asset if the side plays to his strengths.

One can certainly see from the 27-year-old’s displays so far just why Ange Postecoglou was keen on bringing him to the club as the German appears a natural fit for Tottenham’s system.

The on-loan RB Leipzig man put in a typical industrious display on Saturday against Palace but failed to convert two big chances, including one where he had almost rounded Sam Johnstone but allowed the Eagles number one to make a save.

However, Werner did get his goal eventually, turning home the equaliser on 77 minutes after some excellent work down the right from Brennan Johnson, with the goal sending the home side on their way to a 3-1 win.

When asked after the game if his teammates are now starting to understand his game better, Werner told Spurs Play: “I think so. I think it gets even better. Also, the link-up with Destiny on the left side gets better and better.

“Also with Maddison the 10, I think he is looking for me. I think Sonny is a different player in central than Richy is, so also the link with both of them gets better and better.”

While Werner will never be reliable in front of goal, having someone of his pace upfront means that opposition teams know that they cannot push high up the pitch as there is a major risk of them being caught out.

Not only do the likes of Maddison now understand the 27-year-old’s game better but the forward is also realising how to time his runs and which of his teammates play it to his feet.
