‘Big, big’ – Alasdair Gold explains high hopes England and Spurs have for academy graduate

Alasdair Gold has told listeners of his Gold and Guest Talk Tottenham podcast that those within the Spurs and England set-up believe Oliver Skipp will go on to be a ‘big’ player in the future.

Skipp came through the ranks at Tottenham, working his way up through the academy and the youth teams before breaking through with the first team in 2018.

Despite showing promise in his 11 appearances in the 2019/20 season (Transfermarkt), Skipp was ultimately loaned out to Norwich City for the 2020/21 season with a view to gaining valuable first-team experience in the Championship.

Skipp excelled at that level, and was integral in leading Norwich to promotion that season. He played 47 games for the Canaries across all competitions, contributing one goal and two assists (Transfermarkt). The youngster even managed to come third in the Norwich Player of the Year awards for that season (PinkUn).

It was a real coming-of-age moment for Skipp, who returned to Spurs and has since become an established first-team player. Unfortunately, injuries have hampered his progress, but he has now made 60 appearances for the Spurs first team (Transfermarkt).

There are high hopes that Skipp can be an important part of the future for the Lilywhites, and Gold’s comments confirm the 22-year-old is rated very highly both in North London and within the England set-up, too.

He said: “With Skippy, I hope he gets his chance because people underestimate just how good Oliver Skipp can be. He gets lumped into the category of Harry Winks and Tom Carroll and people think he’s just another one of them. He is not.”

On what he’s heard, Gold added: “People within the game, within the England setup and at Tottenham, they think he’s going to be a big, big Premier League player.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Oliver Skipp is the real deal, and if he can just stay fit and put together a good run in the team, he will show what he is truly capable of. From all accounts, he is one of the best performers in training, has incredible fitness levels, and is clearly very talented. Hopefully, we can nurture that in the right way and help him excel.
