‘Big heart and immense passion’ – Ex-international boss praises Spurs star

Former Denmark boss Age Hareide has lavished praise on Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, admitting the Tottenham midfielder has come on leaps and bounds over the last few years.

Hojbjerg did not take long to win the Spurs fans over following his move from Southampton last summer, quickly becoming one of the leaders in the current Tottenham side.

While the 26-year-old played a disciplined role at the base of the Spurs midfield last season, he was able to show another side to his game for Denmark during this summer’s Europen Championships as he finished the tournament with three assists.

Hojbjerg continued where he left off in the Euros during the international break, putting in two typically composed and industrious displays when helping the Danes to overcome both Scotland and Israel.

While the Spurs star has now become an indispensable part of Kasper Hjulmand’s side, he struggled to get game time under his predecessor, Hareide, who did not award Hojbjerg a single cap from 2016 to 2018.

However, the former Denmark boss has admitted that Hojbjerg has improved considerably since his time in charge of the national side.

He told the print edition of Ekstra Bladet (as relayed by Sport Witness): “Pierre plays with big heart and immense passion.

“I think he has also developed his personality very significantly.

“I am particularly pleased to see how much Pierre is concerned that we must constantly improve in all possible areas.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I have to admit that I had my doubts about Hojbjerg after his form dropped off considerably in the final few months of the campaign. However, in hindsight, I believe that it was likely down to fatigue.

The 26-year-old has displayed in the first three games of the season under Nuno, just as he did at the Euros, that he is far more than just a destroyer in midfield, being capable of making good use of the ball.
