‘Bigger than Spurs’ – Pundit thinks Levy will miss out on his rumoured top summer target

Gabby Agbonlahor has urged James Maddison to snub Tottenham’s approach in favour of a switch to Newcastle United.

It has been reported for several months that Spurs and Newcastle are locked in a battle for James Maddison, who, by some accounts, is valued at around £40m following Leicester‘s relegation (The Sun).

Conventional wisdom would suggest that the Magpies have an advantage over Tottenham since they can offer Champions League football to the midfielder but Football Insider reported last week that the North London club are still of the belief that they can win the race for the Foxes star.

The report claimed that the Lilywhites have made Maddison their top summer transfer target and are hopeful that they can snap up the player they do not have a manager in place at the moment.

However, Agbonlahor has now remarked that he would not hesitate in moving to St James’ Park over the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium if he was in the England international’s shoes.

The former Aston Villa man told talkSPORT Breakfast (01/06/23 at 9:10 am) about Maddison: “He would want to go bigger than Spurs. If I am James Maddison, then I am not going to Spurs. That ship has sailed. They finished eighth, with no European football.

“James Maddison will look at Newcastle. Perfect fit for him. You can see him in that Newcastle side. Playing Champions League football. Better project than what’s happening at Spurs. They are going in a better direction.

“If I am James Maddison, then I am not choosing Spurs, even though he would suit them. They are crying out for a number ten.”

The fact that Newcastle are in the Champions League and seem to be heading in the right direction might make them a more attractive destination for Maddison.

However, having said that, Spurs still have some pull and they could perhaps convince the midfielder to sign if they present an ambitious project to him.
