Bio: All you need to know about Tottenham target Sebastian Caceres

Who is Sebastian Caceres? Tottenham Hotspur need defenders, and the answer to the club’s problem might well be plying his trade in South America right now.

Tottenham’s defensive issues appeared to be solved when they signed Micky van de Ven in the summer, with the Dutchman forging a strong partnership with Cristian Romero.

However, a long-term injury to the former has left Ange Postecoglous backline exposed. Rumours suggest the North London side have already started negotiations to bring in Sebastian Caceres to bolster the central defensive area (Fernando Esquivel).

Sebastian Caceres career stats

Sebastian Caceres has been with Club America since January 2020 and has now become a mainstay in the starting line up for the Mexican side.

Last season, Caceres made 36 appearances in all competitions for Club America, registering one goal and one assist (Transfermarkt). This term, the 24-year-old has played nine times as America have raced to the top of the Mexican first division.

He has also made his breakthrough at international level over the last year or so, having made his Uruguay debut last September. Caceres has played the full 90 minutes in the last six games for Uruguay (Transfermarkt) and looks to have a bright future with his country.

Sebastian Caceres strengths and weaknesses

Caceres possesses pretty much everything you’d want from a centre-half: he is good in the air, strong and aggressive, and has great timing in the tackle.

In many ways, he’s a very similar beast to Cristian Romero, in that he has that South American flair and passion that can either be a very good thing, or a very dangerous trait, depending on how he feels on the day. Caceres does have a propensity for picking up a booking – he has three already this season – and his discipline is definitely something to keep an eye on.

Still, Caceres does have great awareness and is particularly adept at executing a standing tackle to stop his opponents. He’s not the quickest defender, but he knows how to put himself in the right place at the right time.

He’s also improved massively this year in terms of his progressive passing, or at least his intention to make those kinds of passes. That bodes well for a player looking to step into Postecoglou’s system.

What are people saying about Sebastian Caceres?

Right now, all that people seem to be saying about Caceres is that he kept Lionel Messi in his pocket during the recent win for Uruguay against the world champions. Uruguay won 2-0 against Argentina and Messi had very little impact on the game thanks to Caceres’ defensive efforts.

On Twitter, Valverde del Cap shared an image from Grand Theft Auto where the dog owner was replaced by Caceres, and the dog replaced by Messi: humorous, and also very accurate in relation to the recent match.

The Uruguay national team account also had plenty of praise for Caceres, tweeting: “What a great game Sebastián Cáceres played.”

So, how likely are Spurs to get their man? Well, Fernando Esquivel claims a £3m bid has been rejected, with Club America looking for closer to £6m. That’s because the player’s current contract runs out next December, so Tottenham may be able to force through a real bargain.

What do The Spurs Web think?

Sebastian Caceres is a very solid centre-half who would not cost Spurs an arm and a leg, and is definitely someone we should be pushing to sign in January. He’s young enough to grow as a player, but has a decent level of experience that he could come straight into the team. I’d be surprised if we didn’t make this one happen.
