Albert Gudmundsson career stats

He may have been born in Iceland but Albert Gudmundsson has actually spent most of his football career playing in the Netherlands, with clubs such as Heerenveen, PSV Eindhoven, and AZ Alkmaar, before making the move to Italy with Genoa in January 2022.

Gudmundsson now has 27 goals and nine assists in 79 games for the Serie A side, with 12 goals and four assists coming this season. His ten Serie A goals put him in the top 10 of goalscorers this year, and he actually exceeds his xG for the season by 3.7 goals, or 4.2 goals when you consider non-penalty goals (FBRef).

The Icelandic star has also made more key passes than anyone in Serie A this season (67), has delivered the fourth-most crosses (149), and is second for shot-creating actions (126). He also ranks ninth for successful take-ons, with 38 across the campaign for Genoa.

Having made his international debut way back in 2017 at the age of 19, Gudmundsson now has 36 caps and nine goals for Iceland (Transfermarkt). This includes a hattrick in a recent win over Israel in the Euro 2024 play-offs.

What are Albert Gudmundsson’s strengths and weaknesses?

Albert Gudmundsson possesses a wealth of talent and skills, but the most impressive aspect of his game is probably his passing. The midfielder is adept at crossing, set piece deliveries, and intricate passes to open up the opponent’s defence.

As well as creating chances for others, Gudmundsson has a decent goalscoring record, including direct free-kicks and penalties. He has a fierce shot, particularly from long distance, but he’s not afraid to carry the ball forward and use his excellent dribbling skills.

Gudmundsson’s only real area of weakness would be in the air, with the Genoa man often losing out in aerial duels. That said, this is not exactly an area of his game that he necessarily needs to excel in, given his role playing just behind the strikers.

What have people said about Albert Gudmundsson?

The main talk around Gudmundsson of late has been speculation suggesting the 26-year-old has already chosen to stay in Italy next season by joining Inter Milan.

However, if Spurs were to sign Gudmundsson, they’d be getting a player described as “sensational,” someone who is regarded as “technical and strong,” and who has been labelled “one of the best players in Serie A this season.”

And, according to a report from Football Transfers, Spurs may have an advantage in the race to sign Gudmundsson, and it’s linked to Guglielmo Vicario and Radu Dragusin. Turns out Gudmundsson is represented by GG11, the same agency as the Spurs players.

What do The Spurs Web think?

The fact Gudmundsson is a bit of a hybrid between a number 10 and a number 9 is very intriguing, and could offer Postecoglou a load of depth and different options in his squad. He’s having an excellent season, and wouldn’t be too costly to sign either, so we are very much on board with this one.
