‘Bit early’ – Report reveals why 18-year-old decided to snub Spurs

Het Belang van Limburg have revealed that Arthur Vermeeren turned down Tottenham’s approach as he felt that he was not at the right stage of his career to make a move to England.

It has been widely reported over the last couple of months that Tottenham have their eye on Vermeeren, who is seen by many in Belgian football as the next potential breakout star to emerge from the nation.

At the start of this week, Football.London’s Alasdair Gold reiterated that Spurs are continuing to track the 18-year-old and are considering signing him and loaning him back to Royal Antwerp for the remainder of the season.

However, a couple of days ago, Spurs received a major blow as it emerged that Atletico Madrid had struck a deal worth €22m (£18.8m) plus add-ons with Antwerp for the midfielder’s transfer (Fabrizio Romano).

Vermeeren’s decision to turn down Spurs

Het Belang van Limburg have now also reported that Vermeeren did not entertain an approach from Tottenham earlier this window and was much more receptive to the La Liga side’s advances.

This is because the Belgian international allegedly feels it is a ‘bit early’ to make the switch to the Premier League.

Vermeeren might have felt that playing in Spain would be more conducive to his development. However, his decision still does not make total sense as Tottenham’s style of play would suit him much better than Atletico Madrid’s.
