Blow for Tottenham as the race for Morgan Gibbs-White just got harder

Tottenham Hotspur remain keen on securing the services of Morgan Gibbs-White, but the Lilywhites have just found out that they could face a major roadblock in their efforts to do so.

Given their issues in the middle of the park of late, it is unsurprising to see that Spurs are being linked with some big-name midfielders ahead of the summer.

It emerged last month that Tottenham had set their sights on an ambitious move for Morgan Gibbs-White, who looks on course to fire Nottingham Forest into the Champions League.

The 25-year-old’s impressive displays have also seen him break into the England squad and the update suggested that he might be sold for £50m this summer if Forest fail to tie him down to a new contract.

Man City now eyeing move for Morgan Gibbs-White

However, Spurs have now been handed some bad news as The Athletic have revealed that another Premier League giant has turned their attention to the Forest man.

It is explained that Man City are looking for a replacement for Kevin De Bruyne, who will leave the club at the end of the season.

Gibbs-White is one of the options that the reigning champions have identified ahead of the summer, although he is not the only one on their list, which also includes the likes of Bayer Leverkusen’s Florian Wirtz.

Interestingly though, the report explains that City do not intend to push ahead with approaches for any of their targets until their new director of football Hugo Viana fully gets underway in his role.

It remains to be seen if that offers Tottenham and Gibbs-White’s other suitors an opportunity to steal a march over Pep Guardiola’s side in the race for the midfielder.

Tottenham have cheaper alternatives for Gibbs-White

It is unlikely that Spurs are going to be able to convince Morgan Gibbs-White to make a move to N17, especially given that Forest look set to qualify for the Champions League.

However, the Lilywhites have seemingly identified cheaper alternatives, with reports over recent days suggesting that Tottenham are leading the race to sign Angel Gomes on a free transfer.

Spurs also have the option to sign Johnny Cardoso for £21m from Real Betis this summer, which they might be tempted to activate, given the USA international’s impressive run of form of late.
