Darren Bent thinks it is ‘bonkers’ that Tottenham managed to sign James Maddison for just £45m, insisting that the midfielder is easily worth £90m in the current market.

Maddison has hit the ground running at Tottenham, having amassed four goal contributions in the first four games of the Premier League season.

The 26-year-old stands a good chance of taking home August’s Player of the Month award, having been named among the six nominees for the prize.

It is a measure of how well the attacking midfielder has started the season that he was named in England’s starting eleven in the Euro qualifier against Ukraine ahead of Manchester City superstar Phil Foden.

James Maddison is now worth £90m or more

Many have expressed disbelief at the fee that Tottenham paid to sign a proven top-class Premier League performer like Maddison, especially given some of the fees that other midfielders across the division have fetched during the summer transfer window.

When asked if the former Leicester City man is worth £90m, Bent has now told talkSPORT: “Easy, because he’s been that good, that impressive. For James Maddison, I think it’s a bargain, even at £45 million. It sounds bonkers, it’s a bargain.”

Maddison only had one year left in his contract with Leicester, which is why he was available for a low fee. Additionally, the likes of Man City, Man Utd and Arsenal already had top number tens in their squads, which is Newcastle were the only other top side competing with Spurs. The Magpies too were seemingly lukewarm with their interest.
