Boost for Tottenham as first-team star is set to return from international duty early

Tottenham have been handed a boost as Pape Matar Sarr is set to return from the African Cup of Nations early after Senegal were knocked out on penalties last night.

Sarr parted ways with Spurs before the winter break, along with Yves Bissouma and Heung-min Son who were competing in AFCON and the Asian Cup respectively.

Tottenham had relied on Sarr as the legs in the new-look Postecoglou engine room this season, with the 21-year-old enjoying somewhat of a breakthrough campaign with the Lilywhites.

Pape Matar Sarr will now return to Tottenham Hotspur

While Bissouma and Son both fight it out in the Round of 16 this week, Sarr and Senegal fell short of the quarter-finals when they were defeated by Ivory Coast on penalties last night.

Sarr stepped up second and smashed his own penalty home, but with Serge Aurier and Co slotting every single spot-kick into the back of the net, the reigning African champions were dumped out of the tournament far earlier than expected.

Spurs Web Opinion:

Senegal’s loss is Tottenham’s gain here. Of course, we all wanted to see the Spurs lads go and lift some trophies, but it will be a huge boost to have Sarr home earlier than expected.
