Boro boss Chris Wilder provides update on Djed Spence’s situation amid Spurs interest

Middlesbrough manager Chris Wilder has revealed that he is hoping for a swift conclusion to Djed Spence’s future.

The right wing-back has been heavily linked with a move to Tottenham Hotspur with the Boro boss believing that it is in everyone’s interest if the matter can be sorted sooner rather than later.

Wilder revealed last week that Spence appears to have his heart set on a move to north London but the deal has to be right for the Championship outfit (Northern Echo).

Spurs chairman Daniel Levy is reported to be personally leading the talks to bring the England Under-21 international to the club, with managing director of football Fabio Paratici focusing on other transfer targets (Sky Sports).

Spence caught the eye last season during his season-long loan stint at Nottingham Forest, where he helped Steve Cooper’s side secure a return to the Premier League following a play-off victory against Huddersfield Town.

Wilder told the Northern Echo: “Hopefully, it will come to a quick conclusion because that would help everybody,”

“That’s the way we’d like it to be, although the situation isn’t always straightforward.

“It is taking its time, but hopefully, it can get sorted. If not, then as I’ve said all along, Djed comes back to us.”

Tottenham will want to get the deal over the line within the next few days ahead of the trip to South Korea, otherwise, it could open the door for Boro to try to gather interest from other clubs.

Emerson Royal’s future could hinge on what happens with Spence, with Matt Doherty likely to battle it out with the 21-year-old for a starting place in Antonio Conte’s team.
