Brad Friedel heaps praise on one ‘deceptively fast’ Tottenham defender

Brad Friedel has spoken in glowing terms of Ben Davies after the Welshman delivered an impressive performance at left wing-back against West Ham United on Sunday.

Despite Tottenham’s defensive struggles this season, one can argue that Davies has remained extremely consistent at left centre-back, having surely made the fewest unforced errors out of the club’s central defenders this season.

With Ryan Sessegon out with a hamstring injury and Ivan Perisic playing 90 minutes at the San Siro, the former Swansea man was asked to do a job at left wing-back against the Hammers and he certainly delivered.

Davies made some enterprising runs throughout the game and was a constant threat down Tottenham’s left, setting up Emerson Royal’s opener.

Freidel remarked that the Wales international is much quicker than people think and opined that the defender would have no issues adapting to the demands of the wing-back role, due to his technical quality.

The former Spurs goalkeeper told Sporting Post about Davies: “He’s played at wing back and he can play there – he’s a versatile player. He got the assist for the first goal getting very far forward.

“Technically he’s very good, a sound passer and deceptively faster than people think. I don’t see any issues why he can’t adapt to it and his service with his left foot is solid.

“So if you can get him in possession of the ball further up the pitch I think that’s a good thing for Tottenham.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Davies is undoubtedly the most underappreciated player in the squad, for no other reason than for the fact that he has been at the club for a long time and many fans have thus already made up their minds about him not being good enough.

If he was South American and had been signed two or three years ago, the fan base would hold him in much higher regard. There is a reason that all of our recent managers have valued Davies quite highly.
