Brendan Rodgers provides update on Maddison future amid Spurs links

Brendan Rodgers has said that he is confident that James Maddison will still be at Leicester City by the end of the January transfer window.

Maddison was arguably one of the best players across the Premier League in the first part of the 2022-23 campaign, scoring seven times and providing four assists in 13 Premier League games (Transfermarkt).

With the attacking midfielder’s current contract running out in the summer of 2024, his future has unsurprisingly been the subject of plenty of speculation over recent months.

Tottenham have been mentioned as a potential destination for Maddison, with Football Insider reporting not too long ago that the 26-year-old would jump at the chance of joining Antonio Conte’s side.

However, the North Londoners are certainly not the only ones seemingly eyeing a move for the Foxes star, with ESPN stating last week that the Lilywhites could face competition from many other Premier League clubs for the midfielder.

However, Rodgers is confident that his talisman is not going anywhere for the time being.

The Leicester boss told Football.London about Maddison: “I’ve been given no indication that we have to do anything with James in January. He’s someone I want to keep here.

“When you have good players, it’s a good sign, they’ll always be coveted by other teams. That’s OK, I’m confident those players will be here. My focus is on improving the squad. That’s what I want to do.”

It seems fairly clear by now that Maddison is not leaving the King Power Stadium in January. If the 26-year-old does not sign a new contract with Leicester, he will have just one year left on his deal next summer. That will likely give the midfielder a lot more options to choose from.
