Brennan Johnson admits he is not happy with one area of his game at Spurs

Brennan Johnson has said that he is not happy with his goal output since joining Tottenham Hotspur, admitting that he is keen to find the back of the net with regularity.

Most of Tottenham’s summer signings have hit the ground running but the same can perhaps not be said of Johnson, who was the most expensive of the club’s additions last summer.

While the 22-year-old has demonstrated that he can be a handful for defences when he is at his best, he has not yet delivered the kind of statement performances that some would expect from him, given his considerable price tag.

The Wales international has now opened up on his first six months at Tottenham, admitting that he is still adapting to the team’s approach.

When asked about having to get used to Ange Postcoglou’s style of play, the winger told Football.London: “It’s definitely a challenge and something I’m still getting used to since joining the club but I couldn’t really ask much more.

“Being able to run to get goals and I haven’t scored as many as I would have wanted to running into those areas and getting close and creating things is something I’ve always wanted. Hopefully, I can get some more goals soon.

“I hope [that first home goal is coming]. I had a few chances today and I was unlucky not to score I think. Maybe I should have done better with a few other ones. I’m just trying my best and hopefully, it can come soon.”

Brennan Johnson is aiming for more goals at Spurs

The former Nottingham Forest man is now getting a better understanding of how his fellow attackers operate, and he admitted that he quite enjoys playing with Richarlison.

When asked about his combination play with the Brazilian, Johnson responded: “I think my game suits his game. As soon as I get the ball at my feet he’s a goalmouth poacher, he always gets in front of his man. I think last season when he didn’t get too many goals, he was still in those positions but maybe the ball didn’t find him.

“This year he’s always in the right positions and so hungry to score goals. When I get the ball out of my feet I’m just looking for him and in the last few games he’s been in those positions.”

The winger admitted that the goal he set up for Richarlison in the 3-1 win over Bournemouth last week was straight off the training ground.

He said about that goal: “The one against Bournemouth, we work on it so much in training, early first-time crosses and the manager says that if you look up you’re just wasting time because if you make a run in behind then everyone is running backwards, so if you look up it just gives the defence more time to get back into position.

“If I get that ball out my feet and I put it into an area then it’s just down to Richy to get into those positions and he always does.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Johnson has definitely been one of our better players over the last month and a half. While the 22-year-old might have hit the heights that he wants to, he has shown enough to suggest that he is going to be a potent weapon when he settles in fully into his new surroundings and is playing with confidence.
