Johnson netted a last-gasp winner for Tottenham

23-year-old, Brennan Johnson, has been a player many pundits and fans have been critical of in recent weeks with the Welshman struggling to make an impact in Tottenham’s lacklustre opening four games of the season.

Johnson himself ended up deactivating his Instagram account as a result of the abuse he received.

Postecoglou defended the forward this week, stating (Evening Standard): “he’s working his backside off, he’s asking for feedback, he’s doing everything right, he’s trying so hard to become the player he wants to be, it’s hurting him a lot.”

Spurs supporters soon cheered Johnson’s name again when the Welshman guided a shot past Coventry’s Ben Wilson, snatching a late win and a place in the Carabao Cup fourth round despite Spurs being second-best for the majority of the tie.

‘We let them off far too easy’ – Brennan Johnson

Brennan Johnson was interviewed shortly after his last-minute heroics, giving an honest review of his side’s performance in an interview with Sky Sports, stating: “It was really difficult. There wasn’t one part of us that underestimated Coventry.

“We have played them a few times [in my career] and know they play good football. At times we let them off too easy and gave them too many chances. We were under some real pressure, but we will always keep going.”

When asked about the game’s hectic nature, Johnson admitted: “That has happened too many times.

“It has been a bit too chaotic; we gave the ball away too many times, we weren’t too much of a threat. For most of the game, we didn’t play forward enough. The goals came from quick play and that’s what we want to do more often.”

Johnson was questioned about the feeling of scoring his first goal in thirteen games, stating: “It was really nice. It’s a great feeling to score especially so late. To get in the next round is really important, penalties is a toss of a coin so getting the goal really late was very beneficial.”

Spurs Web opinion

Brennan Johnson was the perfect man to score Tottenham’s last-minute winner away to Coventry with most Spurs fans likely to say the 23-year-old was the player most needing of a goal with the winger clearly lacking confidence in his recent showings.

Johnson also gave a very honest and accurate reflection of the game. Tottenham do need to minimise the chaos they allow in a game and assert more control in order to utilise the possession that the team creates under Postecoglou.
