Bundesliga club mock the idea of Tottenham’s interest in defender

RB Leipzig have mocked a Spurs fan on social media for suggesting that Dayot Upamecano was Tottenham bound in the summer.

Upamecano has been impressive for Leipzig over the past two seasons, establishing himself as one of the best young defenders in the Bundesliga.

Don Balon (as translated by TEAMtalk) claimed last month that Upamecano was on the top of Jose Mourinho’s wish list as far as centre-backs are concerned.

The 21-year-old, who reportedly has a release clause of €60 million, is said to have made up his mind to leave the Red Bull Arena this summer (Sport Bild via Metro).

Tottenham’s North London rivals’ Arsenal have also previously been linked with a move for Upamecano (Daily Star).

The German club who knocked Jose Mourinho’s side out of the Champions League this season posted two photos of the centre-back as a child, asking: “Who’s that?”, to which a Spurs fan replied with: “A future Spurs player”.

Leipzig’s Twitter admin did not take too kindly to the comment and made a snide comment with their reply: “Spurs and a future…? This doesn’t add up…”

Needless to say, the comment was extremely popular with some Arsenal fans who are hoping they can beat the Lilywhites to the Frenchman’s signature this summer.

Spurs Web Opinion

While signing a centre-back is likely near the top of Jose Mourinho’s priorities this summer, the looming financial crisis has pretty much ruled out the prospects of big-money signings like Upamecano. Unless Leipzig are willing to lower their valuation of the defender, I can’t see him moving anywhere this summer.
