Can Timo Werner play for Spurs against Manchester United this weekend?

Timo Werner is now officially a Tottenham Hotspur player, but has the 27-year-old signed in time to be registered for the weekend’s game against Manchester United, or will we have to wait to see the new Spurs man in action?

After a rather short negotiation process, Timo Werner has arrived in North London. We’ve seen him wearing the white of Tottenham, so there’s no going back now.

The German winger will stay with Spurs until the end of the season, during which time the club will pay his salary. There is also a purchase option on Werner, which allows Spurs to make the move permanent for roughly £14.6m (Fabrizio Romano).

While the switch may have appeared to have been fairly straightforward for Tottenham, they were not the only club who were looking at signing Werner this month, with Football Insider claiming Liverpool, Aston Villa, Newcastle, and Manchester United were all keen.

The latter are actually Tottenham’s next opponents, with the Red Devils hosting Ange Postecoglou‘s side in the Premier League on January 14. So, will we get to see Timo Werner in action for the first time this weekend?

Can Timo Werner play for Spurs this weekend?

The short answer is yes, Werner can play for Spurs against Manchester United. There is a deadline of midday on Friday, by which point players must be registered with their new teams in order to play at the weekend.

With Werner signing for Spurs on Tuesday, this gives the club plenty of time to arrange the necessary paperwork to get the player registered by Friday.

Spurs Web Opinion

I have a feeling Werner will start on the bench at the weekend, simply because Postecoglou may deem that he hasn’t had sufficient time to adjust to the squad and the system. I expect a front three of Richarlison, Brennan Johnson, and Dejan Kulusevski, but I would be very surprised if Werner doesn’t make an appearance in the second half.
