‘Cannot explain it with words’ – Bryan Gil reacts to Sevilla return from Spurs

After netting in Sevilla’s win over Mallorca on Saturday, Bryan Gil has admitted that he is indescribably happy to be back at the La Liga club.

When Tottenham secured Gil from Sevilla back in 2021 (in a deal worth £25m plus Erik Lamela), the youngster seemed to have the world at his feet, being considered by many to be the best young talent in Spanish football.

However, the 22-year-old’s development has stagnated considerably in the 18 months since, with the winger struggling to get game time at Spurs.

His prospects of getting minutes in North London were further diminished when the Lilywhites signed Arnaut Danjuma on loan from Villarreal in January, with reports indicating towards the end of the transfer window that the Spaniard was desperate to leave the club (Relevo).

Gil eventually got his wish as he sealed a return to Sevilla on loan just before transfer deadline day. In his first start back at the La Liga club against Mallorca on Saturday, the on-loan Spurs star impressed, looking dangerous on the ball and getting some testing crosses in from the left.

He found the back of the net in the 40th minute of the game to put Jorge Sampaoli’s men 2-0 up after Jesus Navas’ cross from the right fell kindly to him.

Speaking after Sevilla’s win, the winger told Marca (12/02/23 as relayed by Sport Witness): “Here I am very happy, in the club that saw me grow, I cannot explain it with words. I am very excited.”

Based on the various interviews that Gil has been giving since sealing a loan move to Sevilla, it does not appear as if he wants to return to Spurs or the Premier League.

However, given the current economic situation of Spanish clubs, it is difficult to see who would be able to afford a permanent deal for the winger.
