‘Can’t believe it’ – Gazza speaks out on Spurs player’s price tag

After four good years at the club, it is time to say goodbye to our first-choice right-back, Kieran Trippier as he joins Atletico Madrid (Tottenham Hotspur).

The BBC have reported that Spurs managed to get £20m for the defender this summer, who has signed a three-year deal with the Spanish side.

Whilst at Tottenham, Trippier was known for his attacking prowess down the right flank as he provided 19 assists in 114 appearances and scored 2 goals for Spurs (Whoscored).

With Kieran Trippier’s departure, all the talk is now about who will replace the England World Cup 2018 hero in the Spurs starting line-up.

Do Spurs have a plan to bring in a shiny new right-back? Or, is there a ready-made replacement in Serge Aurier, Kyle Walker-Peters, or Juan Foyth?

Whatever the case, one Spurs legend does not believe that Tottenham received enough money for Trippier, despite agreeing that it is a good move for the player himself.

Paul Gascoigne has been talking with Talksport and has had his say on the transfer, he even included one of his infamous one-liners: “He’s a good player and it’s a good move for him, a big move.

“But I just can’t believe he’s going for £20million…

“Some of the players are going for so much nowadays, it’s ridiculous.

“Some of them can’t even trap a bag of cement, honestly…

“But it’s another good player having the chance to play abroad. I did it, but whether he’ll do as good as me, who knows?”

Spurs Web Opinion:

It’s funny, you would hope that a replacement for Trippier has already been lined up, but does Mauricio Pochettino think he can convert Foyth into our next first choice right back? I would argue that a long-term big name needs to be brought in, much like Man United with Wan-Bissaka, but time will tell whether Spurs will invest.

  1. We’d better have a plan on this. What with Rose being frozen out too, we seem to be shunting out some of the
best full or wing backs in the country, if not Europe, over recent seasons (starting with Walker).
And no ..£20m for Trippier is NOT enough in this overpriced over-hyped and inflated market.
It’s lousy business letting our first choice right back go for this figure, so Spurs just have to have
something up their sleeve. Even if Dani Alves came on a year contract, that would be something
while we were evolving as a club. But Spurs can’t just rely on Foyth and KWP and Davies, and certainly
not Aurier! Why couldn’t we sell HIM for £20m, instead of Tripps??!!
After all, we paid £25m for PSG’s 3rd choice right back ..and that’s what he’s basically been at Tottenham ..2nd or 3rd choice!
