Carragher claims Gareth Bale is yet to prove that ‘unfair’ treatment from Zidane was wrong

Jamie Carragher has claimed that Gareth Bale’s struggles with form and fitness since his return to Tottenham have not proven that Zinedine Zidane was wrong about the Welshman.

Bale struggled for consistent game time during his final two seasons at Real Madrid and the issues between him and Zidane were well publicised.

Upon completing a fairytale return to Tottenham in the summer, Spurs fans would have been hoping to see the Bale of old once again.

However, his time at Spurs has not gone according to plan so far and he has not shown enough to warrant a regular place in the side.

The 31-year-old has only made a single Premier League start for Spurs since returning and is currently out with a calf injury.

Carragher insisted that Tottenham need more from Bale if they are going to have any chance of winning the title this season.

The former Liverpool defender wrote in The Telegraph: “I do not believe Spurs will win the title. They were too negative in recent games against Crystal Palace and Wolves, and that cost them points.

“Jose blamed the players. I don’t buy that. It is how he plays. But they will be closer and more competitive in games against the rest of the top six.

“They need more from Gareth Bale to think beyond a top-four place. Bale has barely figured since his return and is injured again.

“After several years of complaints about unfair treatment from Real Madrid, we are yet to see the evidence that Zinedine Zidane was wrong.”

Bale’s performances have certainly not been up to mark so far but I still would not write the Welshman off. I can see him showing his quality once he gets a run of games in the side. Given the fairly easy fixtures we have coming up over the next couple of weeks, this would have been the perfect opportunity for the returning superstar to get up to speed and build some confidence. It is a shame that he got injured at exactly the wrong time.
