Celtic boss reveals key factor in helping to sign Spurs player for next season

Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou has admitted that he hopes the prospect of securing Champions League football will help to persuade Cameron Carter-Vickers to remain at the club.

The USA international moved to Parkhead on a season long loan deal from Tottenham Hotspur during the summer transfer window which included an option to make the deal permanent, with the Daily Record claiming in November that Daniel Levy would be holding out for around £10million.

Carter-Vickers who came through the ranks in north London he has so far failed to make a single Premier League appearance for his parent club and has instead had to make do with experiencing first team football during loan spells at the likes of Sheffield United, Swansea City and Bournemouth.

The 24-year-old has been a regular in the Celtic starting eleven this season having made 35 appearances in all competitions, scoring three goals (transfermarkt).

The central defender is also said to have attracted attention from English clubs including Leicester City, Wolves, Bournemouth, and Watford (SBI Soccer).

Postecoglou told the Daily Record when asked about the futures of Carter-Vickers and fellow loanee Jota: “I’m sure Champions League football will help us keep them.

“But I’m also sure that it will be an attraction for others to come to our football club.

“This is a two-way thing. The player has to want to be here and we have to want them here.

“When you have that, I’m sure we’ll get a deal done.

“But there’s no issue if players see their future away from here or have different motivations.

“The appeal to come to Celtic is playing in front of 60,000 people every second week, competing in Europe, going for trophies and playing for a club that’s universally known around the world. That’s the attraction.

“If we are playing in the Champions League next year and, if not next year, it should be our goal every year then it will be an attraction for players to stay.

“But it will also be an attraction for players to come.

“Both Cameron and Jota are saying all they need to say to me with their performances. They have been outstanding contributors and great young men as well.

“I love having them as part of his football club.

“But if they can get more money down south, that’s fine. I’d never deny them that.

“We could get offers for some of our other players, depending on how we finish the season.

If Tottenham can recoup close to anywhere near £10million for Carter-Vickers it would represent excellent business and hopefully the money would be given to Antonio Conte to put towards some much-needed reinforcements to rebuild his squad.

Carter-Vickers is comfortably at home at Celtic and in fairness that his more his level than playing week in, week out for a club of Spurs’ stature.
