Celtic line up Keane deal

Celtic are reportedly planning to make a move for Robbie Keane in January.

Keane has been out of favour recently, with the team’s form in recent games keeping him resigned to the bench.

And Tony Mowbray has been encouraged that Keane is no longer first choice and has sounded out a potential move to take Keane to Celtic Park.

Keane has struggled to hit the level of form he produced in his first spell at the club since returning from Liverpool in January and is currently being kept out by the Jermain Defoe – Peter Crouch combination.

Celtic are looking to bolster their strikeforce in order to strengthen their title push and potentially a European challenge next season.

They hope to land Keane on loan in January, with a possible permanent deal in the summer.

However, a major hitch is Keane’s wages, as they are far greater than any contract they currently have at the club.

Celtic’s financiers are looking at ways that they might be able to broker a deal however, with their interest in Keane being a long-standing one.

Have something to tell us about this article?

  1. Is this the Celtic from the Scottish league, so broke it wants to join the Prem? This story comes around just before every window!

  2. Every transfer window this comes up. I think they want Spurs fans to hate Celtic more than they already do. I’m a Celtic fan who also supports Spurs and I can assure you they are few tims who actually even react to this rumour anymore. Just because he turns up at Celtic games every now and then does not mean he will sacrifice tens of thousands of pounds a week to play in the SPL. This year would be especially strange to leave as Spurs are poised for a top 4 finish and the Chapions league. Stay at Spurs Robbie, and come up and support the hoops on your day off!

  3. Keane might be off form, but he’s not off his rocker. Wishfull thinking Celtic fan’s, Spurs fans, keep some faith and start backing him and he’ll come good again for us.

  4. This of course isn’t the first time Robbie’s been linked with a move to Celtic. However, I think there is more substance to it this time……..possibly on loan in Jan with something more permanent in the Summer. One of the few things he possibly hasn’t sampled yet is the Champions League and this may be the carrot to get him to Celtic Park. Whether Scott Brown (who Harry R rates apparently) may be part of any deal remains to be seen. The main stumbling block being his wages, would need to be dealt with by Dermot Desmond, Celtic’s Irish Billionnaire majority shareholder. He would be the key to this move taking place

  5. Don’t sell Keane we need him as backup for Defoe. Sell Pav and promote one of the youngsters to the first team and give Dos Santos a game every now and then.

  6. can’t see this happening. it would be a MASSIVE step down for Robbie. And anyway, Celtic could never afford his wages or transfer fee. Maybe he’ll go there when he’s 35 or 36 and he’d still be the best player in Scotland.
