Chairman drops hint on Spurs and Arsenal target’s future

According to BBC Sport, both Arsenal and Spurs are going head to head for the signature of Saint Etienne centre half William Saliba.

The report claims that Gunners were close to securing a 30m euro (£27m) deal for the 18-year-old before Tottenham revived their interest to throw the cat among the pigeons.

The defender broke into the Saint Etienne side last season and impressed with the maturity he displayed at the back. While Spurs are quite well stocked at centre half, they could lose Toby Alderweireld this summer (La Gazzetta dello Sport).

Saint-Etienne president Roland Romeyer has now hinted that developments are soon expected in the deal for Saliba.

Speaking to But Football Club, Romeyer said: “The transfer window in England ends on August 8 so yes there will probably be something that will happen.

“William Saliba is contacted by many clubs. We hope that the club and William are happy with what will happen in these days to come.”

The Sun reported earlier that Saint-Etienne want the teenager loaned back to them for next season but The Express report that Spurs want Saliba to go straight into the first team in case Alderweireld departs the club this summer.

The Saint-Etienne president’s statement certainly seems to suggest that Saliba is coming to England in which case it looks like being a head to head battle between Spurs and Arsenal.

If Tottenham are pursuing this deal, then that suggests that we have probably seen the last of Alderweireld in a Spurs shirt.
