Championship manager reacts to 24-year-old being linked with likes of Tottenham

Coventry City boss Mark Robins has insisted that the rumours linking the likes of Callum O’Hare with teams like Tottenham is a testament to how well his players performed last season.

Coventry out-performed expectations by securing a 12th-place finish in the Championship last season, and O’Hare was one of the stars of their campaign.

The versatile attacking midfielder, who was also deployed out wide and as the centre-forward on occasions, scored five times and provided eight assists in 2021/22 (Transfermarkt).

The Telegraph reported earlier this summer that scouts from Tottenham were ‘regularly watching’ the former Aston Villa star last season, along with Nottingham Forests’ Brennan Johnson.

Over recent days, the 24-year-old has also emerged as a target for Burnely, with Vincent Kompany said to have identified the Coventry star as the man to add more creativity to the Clarets midfield (Football Insider).

However, Robins said that he was not concerned about his players being linked with bigger clubs, insisting that it is a sign the Sky Blues are moving in the right direction.

When asked about the speculation over O’Hare’s future, he told The Coventry Telegraph: “I think the fact that our players are getting linked with other teams is testament to what they are doing and what we are doing.

“And that is the nature of the game. If they are doing well and have done well then teams will start to covet one or two of your players, and that’s going to be the case from now on.

“That’s a good thing. You know we are a team that develops people to try and move us forward. But also for their careers. (If they join Coventry) they may get up the ladder a little bit quicker.

“But at the moment there are no decisions to make and nothing to talk about, other than, yes, there will be interest and continued interest in our players that we should be happy about.”

Given the fact that Paratici is overhauling the recruitment department, I would expect Spurs to be eyeing moves for several young talents from the EFL during this window and the coming ones. The arrival of Andy Scoulding and Gretar Steinsson should help Spurs in this regard, given the pair’s expertise in the British market.
