‘Cheekbones’ – Alasdair Gold suggests Spurs defender is fitter than ever

A report from Football.London’s Alasdair Gold suggests that Matt Doherty is working extra hard in training and is looking fitter than ever.

Doherty was one of the standout performers for Antonio Conte’s team in the second half of last season, registering two goals and four assists (Transfermarkt) before his campaign was cut short by injury in April.

The 30-year-old has been pushing to regain full fitness and has only recently returned to the starting line-up for Conte in light of Emerson Royal’s suspension. It’s been a welcome return for Doherty though, who has impressed in his last two outings for Spurs.

Doherty’s performances against Brighton, and particularly against Everton at the weekend, have even led to Conte admitting the player is back to the standards he had set last season (Football.London).

The Irishman had earned the praise of his teammate Harry Kane after the Everton game (SpursPlay), and now Alasdair Gold has commented on the defender’s work in getting back to his best.

On Doherty’s training, Gold said: “Doherty has been working incredibly hard behind the scenes.

“The 30-year-old looks fitter and leaner than ever before – compare the now prominent cheekbones with photos from across his career when he was already Premier League fit but not Conte fit – and this performance was the reward for his efforts.”

Spurs Web Opinion

It’s great to see Matt Doherty back in the team and putting in top performances too. It’s hoped that he can now recapture the kind of form he was in at the end of last season, or better yet, go beyond that.

There’s every chance that with the big push to regain fitness, and the fact he has been working with Antonio Conte for longer now, Doherty may have exceeded the standards he previously set.
