Chelsea legend predicts who will finish third and fourth in Premier League

Joe Cole has backed his former side Chelsea and Arsenal to round out the Premier League top four ahead of the chasing Tottenham and Manchester United.

The race for the final two Champions League places has been hotting up in recent weeks with the sides involved enduring contrasting runs of form.

Chelsea, who are currently sitting in third, have seen a comprehensive lead cut down with unconvincing displays of late, with their latest match resulting in a shock 4-1 defeat at home to Brentford.

Tottenham leapfrogged Arsenal into fourth place with a 5-1 thrashing of Newcastle, while the Gunners stumbled when handed the chance to retake the position by falling to a 3-0 defeat at Crystal Palace.

Although both North London clubs have tallied the same points so far, Spurs have a better goal difference and Arsenal boast a crucial game in hand over their counterparts.

But despite Spurs’ form under Antonio Conte and the other sides’ recent troubles, Cole believes Chelsea and Arsenal will do enough to round out the top four alongside Liverpool and Manchester City.

He told JOE: “Chelsea will do it. I can see Arsenal finishing fourth too. I think it will be Chelsea and Arsenal in those last two positions.

“Having the points on the board is massive. I covered Arsenal’s win at Aston Villa [before the international break] and it was one of those where Arsenal might have got beat in the last few years.

“I know they slipped up against Crystal Palace but I just think Arsenal will have enough, what Mikel Arteta has done there has been brilliant. I think Chelsea finish third and Arsenal should come fourth.”

Spurs Web Opinion

As we have seen throughout the season, the race for fourth place can change pretty quickly depending on which sides blow hot and cold.

There are plenty of games left to see those changes come about again, but Spurs are looking strong at the moment regardless.

The kindness of the fixtures is in their favour, but that does not mean the opponents can be taken lightly at this stage of the campaign.
