Chelsea star Olivier Giroud sends message of thanks to Tottenham Hotspur

Olivier Giroud has thanked Tottenham Hotspur for beating Leicester City on Sunday, thereby giving his Chelsea side some breathing space in the race for the top four.

Tottenham have been out of the running for Champions League qualification for a while now but the game on Sunday was an important one for Jose Mourinho’s men in their quest to qualify for the Europa League.

Leicester were right in the thick of the race for the 3rd and 4th spots going into the game on Sunday.

However, the 3-0 defeat was a big blow to their hopes as, not only did it mean Brendan Rodgers’ side remained level on points with Man Utd and a point behind Chelsea, but their goal difference was also severely dented.

Man Utd and Chelsea also have a game in hand over the Foxes as the duo were in FA Cup semi-final action against each other on Sunday, with the Blues emerging 3-1 winners.

After booking a place in the final, Giroud said (as quoted by The Express): “Thanks to Spurs because Leicester did not win today.

“But now we need to focus on the Premier League because we want to finish top three and obviously win another FA Cup.”

Spurs Web Opinion

In a way, the season is ending at the wrong time for us as the players now seem to have reached a decent level of match sharpness. Recent results seem to have also bought some of the players’ confidence back. In fact, had there been another 4 or 5 games left to play, I would have fancied our chances of getting into the Champions League as we seem to be hitting form just as our direct rivals are going off the boil. Hopefully, we carry this momentum into the start of next season.
