‘Choice is his’ – Roma star hints he has spoken to Zaniolo about his future

New AS Roma signing Paulo Dybala admits he has spoken to Tottenham target Nicolo Zaniolo about his future but the Argentine insisted he will not interfere in the 23-year-old’s decision.

Since Dybala’s switch to the Stadio Olimpico was confirmed, the speculation over Zaniolo’s future has gone hyperdrive, which is not surprising considering that the pair have similar characteristics.

Reports in Italy over the last week have indicated that Tottenham would be willing to meet Roma’s €50m (£42.5m) asking price to snap up the 23-year-old (La Repubblica 22/07/22 via Sport Witness).

Quotidiano Nazionale even asserted a couple of days ago that as things stand, Spurs are the favourites to beat Juventus to Zaniolo’s signing.

It was alleged that Massimiliano Allegri’s side are now concentrating their efforts on selling their fringe players and are ‘not certain’ to reignite their interest in the Roma star.

The report added that Antonio Conte is pushing the North London club’s hierarchy to snap up Zaniolo and the Lilywhites could make a bid for the winger soon.

Dybala, who has made the switch from Turin to Rome this summer, has now been quizzed about his new teammate’s future.

The 28-year-old told TuttoMercatoWeb about Zaniolo: “We all know him, his characteristics and what he can give. I had the opportunity to talk a little with him, the choice it’s his.

“We all want to have the best players with us, we know what he can give us, but we can’t interfere with his future. I think he has to take care of it.”

Spurs Web Opinion

We should not really be reading too much into Dybala’s words as he is evidently just trying to give a diplomatic answer.

However, I doubt Roma would have singed the Argentine this summer if they had made up their minds to hold on to Zaniolo.

I fully expect the 23-year-old to leave the Stadio Olimpico. The big question is whether he will join Juventus or Spurs.
