Chris Waddle believes England should recall Spurs star despite potential confidence issues

Former Tottenham Hotspur winger Chris Waddle has called for Gareth Southgate to name Harry Winks in the England starting eleven to face Bulgaria.

England go into the match tomorrow night on the back of their first qualifying defeat in a decade following the 2-1 defeat to the Czech Republic.

Victory for the Three Lions on Friday would have secured their place in Euro 2020, but now go into the trip to Bulgaria with added pressure.

Waddle did question the fact that Winks could be short of confidence at present due to Tottenham’s poor start to the season but still feels that he would be should be worthy of a recall.

Southgate decided to play with Declan Rice and Jordan Henderson in front of the back four against the Czech Republic, with Winks having to watch on as an unused substitute.

“It will be worth having a look at Harry Winks on Monday night [against Bulgaria]. He will have the ball in all areas from the back which is good and is always available,” Waddle told BBC Radio 5 Live Sport.

“Has he got the confidence? Not having a great time at Spurs, another player going on the park where his club form has dipped.”

Opinion

Winks has been one of Tottenham’s better performers this season but did struggle during the 7-2 defeat to Bayer Munich where he was given very little time on the ball by the German giants.
