Christian Eriksen reveals the real reason he didn’t return to Tottenham back in 2022

Christian Eriksen has shed light on whether Tottenham wanted to sign him when he left Brentford in the summer of 2022.

The Dane managed to battle back from a harrowing incident during Euro 2022 when he suffered a cardiac arrest during a game, and managed to return to playing at the highest level.

After proving himself in a six-month stay at Brenford during the second half of the 2021-22 season, the midfielder was in line to make a big move.

It was reported at the time that Eriksen’s top preference was to return to Tottenham, but it was Man United who won the race for the attacking midfielder.

Christian Eriksen reveals Tottenham return was only paper talk

It was reported at the time that Tottenham’s unwillingness to offer Erisken a big signing-on fee led to the deal collapsing.

However, the 33-year-old, who departed Man United for Wolfsburg last summer, has now revealed that he never heard from the Lilywhites back in 2022, but admitted that he would have loved to return to his former stomping ground.

When asked if a return to Spurs was an option, Eriksen told The Times: “I didn’t hear anything from Tottenham. I was thinking there was more a media interest than a club interest. To be honest, I would have loved to go back, but it didn’t happen, so it was OK.”

Eriksen is proud of his Man United accomplishments

The former Spurs man ended up playing 107 games for United and was an unused substitute in the Europa League final back in Bilbao as the Lilywhites pipped the Red Devils.

Eriksen has admitted that he was proud to have proven himself at Old Trafford after the ordeal he went through during Euro 2020, which threatened to end his career.

When asked about his time in Manchester, he said: “It was very special for me, I had a very, very good time at United. It was a big win to be able to come back, to prove myself at Brentford after what happened at the Euros, and then to get the chance to play at United was amazing and something I’m definitely proud of, to play as much as I did.”
