Cristian Romero’s first words about Spurs move ahead of official announcement

Cristian Romero has spoken about his move to Tottenham Hotspur prior to the club making an official announcement.

The central defender was photographed arriving at Bergamo airport, along with his agent Ciro Palermo ahead of their flight to London after undergoing two medicals in Italy.

The 23-year-old who spent last season at Atalanta while on loan from Juventus expressed his gratitude to the side that finished third in Serie A.

Romero revealed that he was a fan of Daniel Levy’s project at Tottenham from the moment it was explained to him, whilst also thanking Fabio Paratici and the North Londoners for the trust they have shown in him.

The Argentine defender is expected to join Spurs in a deal worth £42.7m (€50m) plus bonuses, which will take the total package to a value of £47m (€55m) (Sky Sports)

Atalanta have moved to replace Romero with Juventus’ Merih Demiral.

He was quoted by Gianluca Di Marzio as saying: “I want to thank Atalanta and assure you that you have one more fan cheering you on from London,” Romero told Sky Sport Italia.

“Tottenham wanted me from the first day, now I have to repay them on the field. I liked the project that have for me and this is why I chose Tottenham.

“I am happy to have made a new choice, I’m also very happy for the year that I spent in Bergamo. I’m sorry to leave, but I have to think about my career and hope this is a good decision.

“I must continue to grow.”
