Clement Lenglet reacts to first goal for Spurs and that Marseille comeback

Clement Lenglet has admitted that Tottenham did not know how to approach the game in the first half against Marseille but they played with a lot more clarity in the second 45.

Lenglet was one of Spurs’ heroes in his home country on Tuesday, with the defender netting his first goal for the Lilywhites with a well-placed header to level the score after Marseille had taken the lead at the end of the first half.

The on-loan Barcelona man started in the middle of Tottenham’s back three in Cristian Romero’s absence and he defended with composure, particularly in the first half when the home side were putting Antonio Conte’s men under pressure.

Lenglet admitted that Spurs did not know whether to defend or attack in the first 45 but praised the performance the side put in during the second period.

The centre-back also expressed his delight at opening his account in front of goal for the North Londoners in such an important game.

Lenglet told BT Sport after the 2-1 win: “We didn’t play well in the first half maybe because we didn’t know if we had to attack or defend and maybe it was not good to play this type of first half.

“After we speak in the locker room and tell what we have to tell, we started the second half with more power and personality to go to score and we played a very, very good second half.

“I am happy to score here, more for the team and we needed one point and it’s very important to win this type of game. I’m happy because it’s an important goal for the team.”

Lenglet has proven against Bournemouth and Marseille that he has the attributes to play well in the middle of the back three. The 27-year-old did very well to direct his header into the corner and to get so much power on it, given how deep Ivan Perisic crossed the ball from.
