Club boss admits he has called Spurs player directly about potential move

Sevilla boss, Jorge Sampaoli, has admitted that he called Bryan Gil directly about a potential move back to La Liga this month, with just a few days left in the January window.

Fabrizio Romano has reported that Gil is now a priority target for Sevilla as they look to reinforce on the wing, following the Spurs youngster’s impressive showings under Antonio Conte this month.

However, despite starring in a string of matches in early January, Gil picked up an injury and has likely seen himself drop down the pecking order again with the signing of Arnaut Danjuma and the injury return of Lucas Moura.

Sampaoli has admitted that he tried to sign Gil when he was at Marseille, before the youngster made the move to Tottenham, and believes the 21-year-old could offer something different on the wing.

He said (Fabrizio Romano): “I called Bryan directly, he’s the right player for us as new winger. I already wanted to sign Bryan Gil when I was Olympique Marseille coach.”

Jorge Sampaoli added (AS): “He seems to me a player who would give us things on the wing, but they are situations that, from wanting to real possibility, I no longer participate.

“[Jeff] Reine-Adelaide seemed to me that he had a lot of potential and then his condition do not concern me. I’m not the one to evaluate that.”

Spurs Web Opinion:

I would be surprised if Bryan Gil did not depart now, with the depth Spurs have on the wing. However, if Lucas Moura is not that close to a first-team return, or if Conte expects a sale, I can see why Gil would be needed as Kulusevski’s understudy.
