Club CEO is ‘sure’ that Tottenham-linked manager will not leave this summer

Bayer Leverkusen CEO Fernando Carro is confident that rumoured Tottenham target Xabi Alonso will still be at the Bundesliga club at the start of next season.

When Alonso arrived at Leverkusen back in October of last year, the club were languishing in the relegation zone but the Spaniard has been able to completely turn around their fortunes, with Die Schwarzroten now fighting for European qualification.

The 41-year-old is now said to be on the radar of a few top clubs, including Spurs, with De Telegraaf even claiming two weeks ago that he had become the shock front-runner for the N17 hot seat.

The Mirror subsequently suggested last week that Daniel Levy is even prepared to pay off the remainder of Alonso’s contract to bring him to North London this summer.

Tottenham are not the only one eyeing a move for the Leverkusen boss, with SportBild revealing recently that Alonso is seen as the ‘ideal’ choice to replace Carlo Ancelotti by Real Madrid supremo Florentino Perez.

However, Carro does not have any doubt that the former Liverpool midfielder will still be at the BayArena at the start of the 2023-24 season.

When asked about the speculation over Alonso’s future, the Leverkusen chief told AS: “He has a contract with us until 2024.

“He is happy here and we are happy with him.

“We are enjoying working together and I am sure we will be with him next season.

“And hopefully, there will be many more, but in football, you can’t look much further.”

Spurs Web Opinion

While I am not surprised to hear that Spurs and Real Madrid are considering a move for Alonso, I suspect he would be fairly low down on the wishlist of both clubs.

The Spaniard perhaps needs to have one more solid season at Leverkusen to become a legitimate contender for the biggest jobs in European football.
