Club chief admits he jumped at the chance to sign out-of-favour Tottenham player

Los Angeles FC have presented Hugo Lloris ahead of the new Major League Soccer season, with the club’s general manager John Thorrington admitting that everyone is thrilled to have such a big name on board.

Lloris’ departure last month signalled the end of an era at Spurs, with the club’s long-serving captain and record Premier League appearance maker sealing a switch across the pond.

While the Frenchman had declined over the last 18 months or so, eventually being relegated to third choice in his final six months at the club, he will be remembered by Spurs fans for his countless heroics, being up there with the best goalkeepers in the world for a good chunk of his time with the Lilywhites.

According to some reports, Tottenham agreed to pay off the six months that were left on the 36-year-old’s £100,000-a-week deal at North London, with the goalkeeper thought to have taken a pay cut to move to the Major League Soccer side (Football Insider).

LAFC are thrilled to sign Hugo Lloris from Tottenham

While presenting the World Cup winner to the media, Thorrington admitted that the Spurs legend will add a lot to the club both on and off the field.

Speaking about Lloris’ arrival, the LAFC general manager said (Los Angeles Daily News): “It’s rare that an MLS team and a team in general is able to sign a World Cup-winning captain and when the opportunity presented itself to sign Hugo and bring him to LAFC, we jumped at the opportunity.

“It did not take long for me and for us and the club to see exactly why Hugo has had that success he has had. I think everybody can see what he does on the field, but I already can see and sense and feel the impact he will have on this group.”

Spurs Web Opinion

One can understand why the opportunity to live in LA and experience the sporting culture in America was too tempting for Lloris to turn down.

There is no reason why the Frenchman cannot play in the MLS for around three years and I am sure he will get a particularly good reception from the Spurs fans in the city.
