Club chief claims ‘time is running out’ for Spurs-linked winger to leave

Sassuolo chief executive, Giovanni Carnevali has admitted that the Serie A club are yet to receive any offers for Domenico Berardi, who was linked with a move to Tottenham earlier in the summer.

Berardi, who has been a consistent performer for Sassuolo over the years, also showed glimpses of his quality in Italy’s successful European Championship campaign during the summer, setting up two goals in the tournament.

Gazzetta dello Sport reported back in June that Spurs, Leicester and Liverpool were all eyeing a move for the 27-year-old, who was said to be valued at €50m (£43m).

Other sources from Italy even suggested that Sassuolo were willing to allow the winger to leave the club this summer.

However, the speculation linking Spurs with a move for Berardi has subsequently died down, with the North London club strengthening their wide areas through the acquisition of Bryan Gil. Spurs are also now rumoured to be after Adama Traore.

Carnevali has revealed that Berardi, who netted 17 goals and registered 8 assists in the league last season, looks set to stay at the club, with time running out in the transfer window.

When asked where the Italian international is going, the Sassuolo chief told 90 min (as relayed by Sassuolo News): “I don’t know, for the moment he is with us and will probably still stay in Sassuolo.

“Some time ago he asked to leave but to date, no proposals have arrived and time is running out and even if the desire could be to please the boy becomes difficult. To date, there is no official offer for the player.”

When asked if Berardi would be happy if he stays at the club, Carnevali responded: “We want to try to find the right solution that suits the player and the club. It’s not easy because the conditions are not easy.

“Right now the most important thing is time because we don’t have much available.

“Domenico is a professional exceptional and as happened with others he will get back on track, but I don’t think there will be any kind of problem with that.”

Reading between the lines, Carnevali certainly does not rule out a late exit for Berardi if Sassuolo receive a big offer. While the winger no longer seems to be on Tottenham’s radar, one would not rule out things changing in the final few days of the window, given that Paratici is known to be a fan of the 27-year-old.
