Club confirm that rumoured Spurs target has suffered major ACL injury

Bayer Leverkusen have now confirmed that Florian Wirtz, who was rumoured to be on Tottenham’s radar, has suffered an ACL injury.

Wirtz has more than filled Kai Havertz’s shoes since his big-money move to Chelsea a year and a half ago.

The teenager is having an outstanding campaign for Leverkusen, having scored 10 goals and provided 14 assists in all competitions so far (Transfermarkt).

The attacking midfielder’s impressive performances for the Bundesliga club have even seen him being capped by the senior German side.

SportBild reported a few months ago that Tottenham had sent scouts to Germany to watch Wirtz in action this season.

However, Leverkusen CEO Fernando Carro insisted last week that he is not concerned about the midfielder’s future and he expects the youngster to stay at the Bayer Arena at least until 2024 (Bild).

Wirtz’s chances of getting a transfer this summer seems to have taken a massive blow, with Bayer confirming that the midfielder has now torn his anterior cruciate ligament.

Spurs Web Opinion

Spurs are likely to be in the market for a number eight in the summer and I would have expected Wirtz to be one of the names on Tottenham’s wishlist, given his age and high ceiling. However, I do not expect any club to take a punt on him this summer after this news as recovery from ACL injuries can be quite tricky.
