Club director claims ‘underrated’ Spurs are favourites to win CL group

Eintracht Frankfurt director of football Markus Krosche has claimed that Tottenham Hotspur are the clear favourites to finish at the top of their Champions League group.

Spurs have been handed a relatively favourable draw, with the North Londoners being placed in Group D with Frankfurt, Marseille and Sporting Lisbon.

Frankfurt certainly will not be pushovers and are coming into the competition fresh off their Europa League glory last campaign.

Meanwhile, Tottenham’s first opponents, Marseille, have had a fantastic start to the season, having won five and drawn one of their first six matches in Ligue 1, and are sitting behind Paris Saint-Germain only on goal difference.

On paper, Sporting look like the minnows in the group, currently languishing in ninth place in the Portuguese top flight.

Krosche believes that the competition between Frankfurt, Sporting and Marseille will be tight but insisted that Antonio Conte’s men are a step ahead of the other three teams.

He told Frankfurter Rundschau: “One thing is clear, Tottenham are favourites. They are one step ahead despite being one of the most underrated teams outside of England, but Lisbon and Marseille are also really good teams, who put in outstanding performances in their leagues last season.

“Anything is possible in a group. These are 50/50 games, so the day’s performance will decide. They will be extremely close games, and we have to push the limits. Tottenham are a little bit ahead, but anything is possible with the other three teams.”

Spurs Web Opinion

One would expect Spurs to win all our home games, which means we only need a couple of points away from home to qualify. However, Conte will want to ensure that we finish at the top of the group so that we give ourselves the best chance of getting a favourable draw for the round of 16.
