Director claims club cannot afford ‘very high’ £17m fee to buy Spurs player

Rennes sporting director Florian Maurice has now confirmed that the Ligue 1 club will not be activating the option to buy Joe Rodon permanently.

Joe Rodon had a decent start to his loan spell at Roazhon Park and delivered some solid displays in the first half of the campaign.

However, the Welshman has struggled to get starts under his belt since the campaign resumed following the World Cup, having largely warmed the bench over the last few months.

The Ligue 1 club have the option to buy the centre-back permanently for £17m but given his lack of starts for Bruno Genesio’s men, it always looked extremely unlikely that the option would be activated.

Football.London reported two weeks ago that the 25-year-old is expected to return to North London at the end of the season, and Maurice has now confirmed that.

The Rennes director told Ouest-France: “As for Joe, there is a very high purchase option. Evidently, it won’t be possible for us to raise that amount.”

Meanwhile, The Daily Mail reported on Monday that new Spurs head coach Ange Postecoglou is expected to oversee a mass clear-out from Hotspur Way this summer, with Rodon likely to be one of the players sold.

Given Rodon’s struggles for game time in France this season, I cannot see any Premier League club coming in for the former Swansea man this summer.

The centre-back might have to move back to the Championship and work his way up to the top flight again.
